About the Author
Emily Ferguson Murphy (also wrote as: Janey Canuck) (1868-1933) was a Canadian womens rights activist. In 1916, she became the first woman magistrate in Canada, and in the British Empire. She is best known for her contributions to Canadian feminism, specifically to the question of whether women were persons under Canadian law. Murphy was also a journalist and author. Her experience in the courts led her to inveigh against drugs, in particular opium and marijuana. As Janey Canuck, Murphy wrote a number of articles about drugs and attendant social problems. These were published in The Black Candle (1922) under her pen name. Her other works include: The Impressions of Janey Canuck Abroad (1902), Janey Canuck in the West (1910), Open Trails (1912), Seeds of Pine (1914) and Our Little Canadian Cousin of the Great Northwest (1923).

Totally Tubular!

I was six years old going into the 80's and sixteen coming out of them and I swear I remember how glad I was when that decade finally ended. Now I find myself gripped by nostalgia (gasp!) and I'm buying books like this. Go figure. I wonder, though, will the opposite be true? Will I eventually HATE the 90's, a decade I thought was pretty great? Maybe, but I digress...
Rettenmund does a tremendous job of categorizing the culture, music, movies, and tv shows of the 80's, placing them into neat little lists like "Ten Albums You Threw Out In Embarrassment in 1990 That You'd Give Anything To Have Back" or "Ten Big Action Flicks Of The 80's." He also adds a nice set of appendices at the end in case you'd like to see who won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1982 (Men At Work) or the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1986 (John Larroquette). Very thorough.
I do have a few compaints, though. The greatest complaint being the absence of an index, for those of us who want to know where all of the Tears For Fears references are RIGHT AWAY. And I suppose the lists were the easiest way Rettenmund could present an overview of ten years of pop culture, but lists of this nature are always subjective in nature, aren't they? I mean, he calls Madonna's "Into The Groove" The ULTIMATE 80's Song (a great song but the ultimate one? I'm not sure...) and says "Rain Man" was one of the most overrated movies of the decade ("Out of Africa" being at the top of his list). Still, I doubt anyone is going to throw the book down in anger because Rettenmund thinks "Out Of Africa" was the most overrated movie of the decade (except for Meryl Streep maybe).
Also, Rettenmund either starts or finishes almost every listing with glib one-liners which do get a little tiring, especially if you read a lot of the book in one sitting. But they do their job and add to the light-hearted mood of the book, which is the point of all this anyway, right? Of course. And in that respect, Rettenmund succeeds and has put together the best pop culture book on the 80's I've found so far. Definitely a worthwhile purchase for everyone in the MTV Generation. Radical!

Calling All Children of the 80's

Do you love the 80's like I do? This will bring it all back to you in one book. The topics covered are current events, fashion, music, TV, and movies. Special attention is paid to the last three especially. I think fans of 80's music will love this the most. It covers everything from Lionele Richie, to Madonna, to Depehe Mode. As for movies, don't forget E.T., The Breakfast Club, and Back to the Future. In the realm of TV, The A Team comes on strong, the Dukes of Hazard wreck their car, and Arnold says "Whatchootalkinabout Willis?"
This will be a great gift for anyone who was a TV child in the 80's. If you're a child of the 80's, you should get it for yourself.

Cool book, great memories

This book was pretty cool. It brought back a lot of memories of tv shows, movies, sayings and styles. The only little gripe I have is that this guy didn't watch some of the shows he wrote about. Namely the Golden Girls (one I have noticed so far) he said they shared a condo (it was a house) and that they ate pans and pans of brownies. While they did eat everything brownies included their main food fetish was the cheesecake. But the guy can't watch every single show to know about them all. This book is really cool.

The Lay of the Land

To navigate a minefield as tricky and replete with dangers as any discussion of the American prison system, it is crucial to have a clear and accurate map of the terrain. The Darkest Hour provides both observational and analytical tools for creating that map. But beware, in reading this book, I cannot help but feel stalked by the suspicion that I am somehow a part of this system. Not as a citizen of the State of Texas, I am not… but as an American, and even just as a human being. The Darkest Hour combines a balcony-level view of the machinery of incarceration with a shuddering experience of the blank solitary confinement door rolling shut. It is a difficult book to read, not because it is poorly written, but because it exquisitely, painfully, highlights a dysfunctional system and its monumental effects on the guards, the prisoners, and the families on both sides of the verdict. Like reading Unbroken, Laura Hillenbrand’s story of Louis Zamperini’s imprisonment in a Japanese POW camp, I had to read The Darkest Hour in bits and pieces, putting it down and walking away for a while so as not to become overwhelmed with the humanity (both good and bad) of it. Dr. Gilmore and Mr. Williams have collaborated to create a story which makes no pretensions of solving the problem, but which offers an invaluable tool, and motivation, to face it.

Exceptional book on witchcraft and demonology....

While other works (Malleus Maleficarum, Demonolatry, Daemonologie, Compendium Maleficarum, Saducismus Triumphatus, ect.) dealing with the subject on witchcraft and demonology, taught that the individuals were, "Servants of Satan." Johann Weyer reported that many of these individuals were mentally disturbed as well as having an illness. Weyer believed in demons and hell, however, did not believe that every person accused of witchcraft was in league with the devil. A very important book on the reality witchcraft and demonology. A must read for any occultist, historian, and layman.

Purchased for the Environmental Engineering PE Exam

This book was suggested to me by several people in my Environmental Engineering PE Prep course. I begrudgingly purchased it and it was very, very helpful on several PE exam questions. The sections on Baghouses, Cyclones, and ESPs have more depth than the Lindeburg Environmental PE book. I recommend it if you are taking the Environmental Engineering PE.

fantastic book, as an environmental engineer i use this book constantly. no matter what the need is for my air pollution problems, this book has the solutions! easy to read, great diagrams, and pictures. Gives me all the information i need to design any control device. I highly praise cooper for this book. Seriously fantastic reference material. i used it a lot as a student and now i use it as a professional. great book. Just great practice problems and examples. even has cost estimates!

Good manual for basic air pollution control principles

Good basic manual for industrial air pollution control. However, this classic book is starting to fall behind as technology in air pollution control advances. Cooper Alley sticks with only the most very fundamental aspects of pollution control. Overall a good manual for the student or engineer, but if you are looking for an introduction to a broad range of controls, a web search might provide better results.
