Raising the bar

From the get go, if you are not aware, this is the second/revised edition of Preto's book on Jogo do Pau. For my review of the original, please refer to

That book, however, has been unavailable for some years, so the author has, fortunately, decided to treat us with the new edition. But it does not end up on simply printing it again... No, Preto really sets up new standards in being maximally honest and offering the best possible value to his readers.
This book is actually re-done. It contains some new material and has been slightly repackaged to make the new presentation as good as possible. The historical part gives a fairly good overview of the most important places, names and time line of events. If you ask me,though, it's best aspect is the authors take on the chronological systematization of development and evolution in using the two-handed weapons - from the medieval battlefields to the later-day civilian practices.
The technical part follows a logical and intelligent path, driven by the functional application. In that regard, the author's argument for the training approach he is offering is excellent, even if somewhat iconoclastic at moments. Honestly, in my eyes it only makes both the man and his work even more valuable.
If you are a self-taught practitioner of weapon based martial arts, or a teacher/coach of the same, this book could easily be the most important one in your library. But the best part is - there is more! While there is plenty of material to work with here, should you decide to really dig in this methodology of training (and you should!), you would be well advised to complement this publication with other ones written by Luis Preto.

Excellent primer on JdP and teaching martial arts.

Luis does a phenomenal job of going over the basics of Jogo do Pau in both single and multiple opponent scenarios. I also learned much more about the history than I was expecting, and as a result I have an even greater appreciation for the art itself. Lastly, as an aspiring martial arts instructor, the section covering teaching martial arts had some advice and methodologies that I hadn't thought too much about, and find quite compelling.
Overall, this book will be an invaluable training tool for me and I would recommend it again. The Kindle version is a little strange (images are basically links in the text that send you to an appendix of images in the back), but I didn't find it to be too cumbersome.
