GAIN A COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF NERVOUS SYSTEM FUNCTION AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO HUMAN NEUROLOGIC DISORDERS

Molecular Neuropharmacology first reviews the fundamental biochemistry of the functioning nervous system and then describes how nerve cells communicate with one another through numerous types of neurotransmitters involving amino acids, monoamines, neuropeptides, and neurotrophic factors, among several others.

The neuropharmacology and neural circuits that underlie complex behaviors as well as major neural disorders are also discussed as are the drugs used to treat those conditions. In the final section, the authors use the concepts presented in the first two sections to explain how irregularities in the biochemistry of neuronal interactions can lead to a wide array of clinical manifestations.

Well-written and up to date

One of the best textbooks I own. I usually rent texts for courses and send them back at the end of semesters, but this is one I'm happy to have bought. An excellent introduction to the building blocks of the brain and their clinical significance.

the book reads easily, explains concepts well
By JFV
I bought this book not for a course or exam, but to answer some specific questions. As a clinical physician I thought it would be a reference text only. Now I find I can't put it down and have started to read it all the way through. Although dense with information in nearly every sentence, the book reads easily, explains concepts well, and is worth every penny twice over. I highly recommend this to anyone in medicine or pharmacology. I only wish it was available when I was a student.

The Man Who Planted Trees, by Jean Giono

Twenty years ago Chelsea Green published the first trade edition of The Man Who Planted Trees, a timeless eco-fable about what one person can do to restore the earth. The hero of the story, Elzéard Bouffier, spent his life planting one hundred acorns a day in a desolate, barren section of Provence in the south of France. The result was a total transformation of the landscape-from one devoid of life, with miserable, contentious inhabitants, to one filled with the scent of flowers, the songs of birds, and fresh, flowing water.

Since our first publication, the book has sold over a quarter of a million copies and inspired countless numbers of people around the world to take action and plant trees. On National Arbor Day, April 29, 2005, Chelsea Green released a special twentieth anniversary edition with a new foreword by Wangari Maathai, winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize and founder of the African Green Belt Movement.

Amazon.com Review
The Man Who Planted Trees is not a detailed how-to guide to planting; it is a touching story of Elzéard Bouffier, who devoted his entire life to reforesting a desolate portion of Provence, in southern France. He single-handedly planted 100 acorns each day before, through, and after two world wars, and transformed a sorrowful place into one full of life and joy. Jean Giono's words offer a tribute to how much good one person can accomplish in a lifetime and advise on how to live life with deep meaning. Illustrated with moving, beautiful wood engravings by Michael McCurdy, The Man Who Planted Trees is simply written but powerful and unforgettable. The text is also available on tape, eloquently narrated by Robert J. Lurtsema and accompanied by music from the Paul Winter Consort.

Review
"Jean Giono's story of a man's generosity to nature-and through nature, to other humans-surely belongs among the most moving and endearing statements of our hope. The story-vision and parable and manual-correctly opposes the tree-planter, the earth-husband, to the makers of war. In the figure of Elzéard Bouffier, Giono summaries the best that can be said of our species. It has given me much joy to reread this story."-Wendell Berry

Fabulous
By John McAndrew
In many readers' lives there are a few books, or maybe only one, which serve as touchstones. They define us like our most vivid memories do. Not many books or stories deserve that kind of devotion, but this one does. It isn't timeless - it's deeply rooted in 20th century France - but its honest treatment of the time and place is one of the things that makes it universal.

There are dozens of facets that could be highlighted in a review, but the one I find most compelling is Giono's treatment of a man alone and how he is yet connected to the world around him. Even a solitary figure can contribute to the birth and health of a community. It's not clear why he does his work, but it's clear that the work is good.

There is such hope here, but no easy palliative. It is a call to lifelong diligence in the service of something good, and important, and bigger than ourselves.

Will inspire you and your children to care for nature.
By Melanie
The Man Who Planted Trees is the tale of Elzeard Bouffier, a man who, after his son and wife die, spends his life reforesting miles of barren land in southern France. Bouffier's planting of thousands and thousands of trees results in many wondrous things occurring, including water again flowing in brooks that had been dry for many years. The brooks are fed by rains and snows that are conserved by the forest that Bouffier planted. The harsh, barren land is now pleasant and full of life.
Written by Jean Giono, this popular story of inspiration and hope was originally published in 1954 in Vogue as "The Man Who Planted Hope and Grew Happiness." The story's opening paragraph is as follows:
"For a human character to reveal truly exceptional qualities, one must have the good fortune to be able to observe its performance over many years. If this performance is devoid of all egoism, if its guiding motive is unparalleled generosity, if it is absolutely certain that there is no thought of recompense and that, in addition, it has left its visible mark upon the earth, then there can be no mistake."
The Man Who Planted Trees has left a "visible mark upon the earth" having been translated into several languages. In the "Afterword" of the Chelsea Green Publishing Company's edition, Norma L. Goodrich wrote that Giono donated his story. According to Goodrich, "Giono believed he left his mark on earth when he wrote Elzeard Bouffier's story because he gave it away for the good of others, heedless of payment: `It was one of my stories of which I am the proudest. It does not bring me in one single penny and that is why it has accomplished what it was written for.'"
This special edition is very informative. Not only does it contain Giono's inspirational story, which is complemented beautifully by Michael McCurdy's wood engraving illustrations and Goodrich's informative "Afterword" about Giono, but it also contains considerable information about how wood and paper can be conserved in the section "The WoodWise Consumer." Goodrich writes about Giono's effort to have people respect trees.
"Giono later wrote an American admirer of the tale that his purpose in creating Bouffier `was to make people love the tree, or more precisely, to make them love planting trees.' Within a few years the story of Elzeard Bouffier swept around the world and was translated into at least a dozen languages. It has long since inspired reforestation efforts, worldwide."
The Man Who Planted Trees is not only a wonderful story, it will inspire you and your children to care for the natural world.

Max Weber: Collected Methodological Writings (Weber in Translation)From Routledge

Weber’s methodological writings form the bedrock of key ideas across the social sciences. His discussion of value freedom and value commitment, causality, understanding and explanation, theory building and ideal types have been of fundamental importance, and their impact remains undiminished today. These ideas influence the current research practice of sociologists, historians, economists and political scientists and are central to debates in the philosophy of social science. But, until now, Weber's extensive writings on methodology have lacked a comprehensive publication.

Edited by two of the world's leading Weber scholars, Collected Methodological Writings will provide a completely new, accurate and reliable translation of Weber’s extensive output, including previously untranslated letters. Accompanying editorial commentary explains the context of, and interconnections between, all these writings, and additional useful features include a glossary of German terms and an English key, endnotes, bibliography, and person and subject indexes.

the introduction is very good, and texts are awesome. The only problem with kindle edition is that Content links to texts do not work, so you are left with navigating through the search option on your device. That's, in my oppinion, a real drawback for a book of over 600 pages.

No Need to Exaggerate, by Frederika Carney

Frederika and Otis Carney met at a lavish debut party in New Jersey. She was a young woman fresh out of boarding school, enamored of New York’s symphonies and museums. He was a dashing ex-marine just returning to his studies at Princeton University after World War II. Their first dance led to an intense romance and decades of adventure.

Thanks to Otis’s writing career, the Carneys rubbed shoulders with great and powerful media giants, including Jack Webb and Louis de Rochement, who pioneered movie house newsreels. They lodged at the Pillsbury estate and were among the first given access to a new craze sweeping the country—personal computers. Frederika, in particular, found them fascinating.

Despite Otis’s success, however, the two always found time for their true calling—ranching cattle outside Tucson, Arizona. Frederika, a lifelong equestrienne, discovered true happiness on a good horse moving cattle from one pasture to another.

From the bustling sophistication of New York to the simple rural life, Frederika and Otis Carney experienced it all. This is their story, told in Frederika’s own words and compiled from letters detailing the couple’s many adventures.

From Publishers Weekly
Tan can relax. If The Joy Luck Club was an astonishing literary debut, The Kitchen God's Wife is a triumph, a solid indication of a mature talent for magically involving storytelling, beguiling use of language and deeply textured and nuanced character development. And while this second novel is again a story that a Chinese mother tells her daughter, it surpasses its predecessor as a fully integrated and developed narrative, immensely readable, perceptive, humorous, poignant and wise. Pearl Louie Brandt deplores her mother Winnie's captious criticism and cranky bossiness, her myriad superstitious rituals to ward off bad luck, and her fearful, negative outlook, which has created an emotional abyss between them. Dreading her mother's reaction, Pearl has kept secret the fact that she is suffering from MS. But as she learns during the course of the narrative, Winnie herself has concealed some astonishing facts about her early life in China, abetted by her friend and fellow emigree Helen Kwong. The story Winnie unfolds to Pearl is a series of secrets, each in turn giving way to yet another surprising revelation. Winnie's understated account--during which she goes from a young woman "full of innocence and hope and dreams" through marriage to a sadistic bully, the loss of three babies, and the horror and privations of the Japanese war on China--is compelling and heartrending. As Winnie gains insights into the motivations for other peoples' actions, she herself grows strong enough to conceal her past while building a new life in America, never admitting her deadly hidden fears. Integrated into this mesmerizing story is a view of prewar and wartime China--both the living conditions and the mind-set. Tan draws a vivid picture of the male-dominated culture, the chasm between different classes of society, and the profusion of rules for maintaining respect and dignity. But the novel's immediacy resides in its depiction of human nature, exposing foibles and frailties, dreams and hopes, universal to us all. From School Library Journal
YA-- Fans of Tan's Joy Luck Club (Putnam, 1989) will love her powerful second novel. Here she creates an absorbing story about the lives of a Chinese mother and her adult American-born daughter. Pressured to reveal to the young woman her secret past in war-torn China in the 1940s, Winnie weaves an unbelievable account of a childhood of loneliness and abandonment and a young adulthood marred by a nightmarish arranged marriage. Winnie survives her many ordeals because of the friendship and strength of her female friends, the love of her second husband, and her own steadfast courage and endurance. At the conclusion, her secrets are uncovered and she shares a trust/love relationship with her daughter, Pearl, that was missing from both their lives. Some YAs may find the beginning a bit slow, but this beautifully written, heartrending, sometimes violent story with strong characterzation will captivate their interest to the very last page. --Nancy Bard, Thomas Jefferson Sci-Tech, Fairfax County, VA

From Library Journal
The Joy Luck Club ( LJ 2/1/89), Tan's remarkable and successful first novel, is followed by this chronicle of Chinese-American life, which shows Tan's growth as a writer. Pearl, the American-born daughter of immigrants, begins the tale with an uneasy visit to her mother for Grand Auntie Du's funeral. Misunderstanding runs deep between mother and daughter: Pearl is married with two young girls of her own, but her mother's life is largely incomprehensible to her. This leads to the large second part of the novel, told in mother Winnie's voice of her young womanhood in World War II-era China. Tan is a gifted natural storyteller. The rhythms of Winnie's story are spellbinding and true, without the contrivance common in many modern novels. Highly recommended. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 11/15/90; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club main selections; first serial to McCall's .

The story of a woman's life in China
By Ratmammy
THE KITCHEN GOD'S WIFE, Amy Tan's second novel, is another story that deals with family history and relationships between mothers and daughters. Unlike her first novel, THE JOY LUCK CLUB, THE KITCHEN GOD'S WIFE takes place mostly in the past.
Pearl and her mother Winnie have never had a very good relationship. Winnie criticizes Pearl often, and makes it unpleasant for Pearl whenever they come to visit. The book opens with Pearl, her non-Asian husband Phil, and their two young children making the drive to San Francisco to attend a family wedding.
Everyone in the family is there at the wedding, including close family friends and relatives that have been a part of Winnie's life since her days back in China in the early `20's and `30's. An argument breaks out between Pearl and Winnie at the wedding, but before Pearl and her family return home, she and her mother talk. The story that Pearl hears from her mother is a story she has never heard before. It is a secret that Winnie has kept from her daughter for decades, for fear of hurting Pearl. Pearl herself has a secret, but it becomes secondary as Winnie's story unfolds.
Winnie's modern day world was a lifetime away from her early beginnings in China. She was born to a woman that was one of many wives belonging to a man Winnie knew as her father. He was a stranger to her, never giving her the time of day. Winnie's mother was beautiful and educated, and together they lived the life of the pampered rich because of her mother's station in life. Winnie's life turns for the worse when her mother disappears for reasons unknown to the young girl. Winnie finds herself losing the protective life she had with her mother, the home she grew up in, and placed in the home of a distant relative, to be treated like a second class citizen. Her life is never the same again.
Because of her new station in life, Winnie is destined to never marry, but through a fluke of fate, she ends up marrying a man that should have been destined for her cousin Peanut. However, after they are married, Winnie finds out that this husband is not the romantic wonderful man he appeared to be during the beginning of their courtship. From this point in her life, she knows only unhappiness and suffering.
Winnie has to endure much during this marriage, including abuse, countless miscarriages and loss of children to sickness and poverty, and with the outbreak of war in China, she does not know what her future will be like. What finally brings her to America and to the husband that Pearl knows as her father, is for the reader to find out.
I highly recommend THE KITCHEN GOD'S WIFE. Although this book is not as fast a read as THE JOY LUCK CLUB, I found that the history of Winnie was fascinating, taking me to a country that I know so little about. The story of Pearl becomes second to Winnie's, but Winnie's story bridges the two stories together, as the reader finds by the end of the book.

Kitchen God's Wife-a must read
By A Customer
The Kitchen God's Wife starts out differently than you would have expected. The start and the end share a bond being told by the daughter but the middle, that is where the true story comes in. A tale of a mother whose life was as good as she made it out to be. Winnie always thought less of herself and higher of others. She was brought up to believe that she was always wrong and that her evil husband was always right and if she disagreed that she deserved to punished. An amazing story filled with chinese culture that does not sound like a history lesson, this book keeps the readers attention and is wonderfully written. You become part of the story as you read it and therefore, seem to be living Winnie's life along with her. Along with all of the hardships and all of the joys. If you have a heart you will be drawn into this book. I had to read this book for an assignment but it turned out that i actually enjoyed this novel and other works by Amy Tan. A book for those who have lost all hope, but somehow still find enough to keep going and remain strong throughout their entire lives. Enjoy!

Beautiful but uninspiring
By Julie Zhou
I absolutely loved Amy Tan's "The Joy Luck Club". As an Asian-American myself, I found it to be a beautiful and genuine telling of cultural and familial challenges faced by immigrants. Therefore, I started "Kitchen God's Wife" with high hopes.

Many things are similar between the two novels. Both are filled to bursting with rich, lyric writing. You can taste the sweetness of the rice cakes and frown at the smell of industrial smoke in Amy Tan's China and America. Both introduce compelling family stories of wrestling with cultural differences and the damages of war.

However, that's where the similarities end. "Kitchen God's Wife" takes the wry cynicism in "Joy Luck Club" and fills the whole story with a sense of constant depression populated with utterly uninspiring characters. The main female character begins the story in the dark about her daughter's secrets and spends the rest of her flashback describing how lost and helpless she always felt. Male character #1 begins the story pompous and irritating and descends into monstrous over the course of 200 pages. Male character #2 is unbelievably perfect and never deviates from his predictable course of knight in shining armor.

The story has no development, no climax, and no resolution. I know nothing about the characters at the end of the story that I didn't know 50 pages in. Unfortunately, this made even the female character's most heartbreaking experiences feel boring and predictable.

This story had a lot of potential, and I was sad that it fell so short of expectations.

Geometry of Characteristic Classes (Translations of Mathematical Monographs), by Shigeyuki Morita

Characteristic classes are central to the modern study of the topology and geometry of manifolds. They were first introduced in topology, where, for instance, they could be used to define obstructions to the existence of certain fiber bundles. Characteristic classes were later defined (via the Chern-Weil theory) using connections on vector bundles, thus revealing their geometric side. In the late 1960s new theories arose that described still finer structures. Examples of the so-called secondary characteristic classes came from Chern-Simons invariants, Gelfand-Fuks cohomology, and the characteristic classes of flat bundles. The new techniques are particularly useful for the study of fiber bundles whose structure groups are not finite dimensional. The theory of characteristic classes of surface bundles is perhaps the most developed. Here the special geometry of surfaces allows one to connect this theory to the theory of moduli space of Riemann surfaces, i.e., Teichmuller theory. In this book Morita presents an introduction to the modern theories of characteristic classes.

Fairly good reading
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
The theory of characteristic classes goes back to the 1930's, and is a subject that is one of the most poorly motivated from a didactic point of view. The literature on the subject is vast, but there are few works that explain the theory in a way that is transparent and helpful to those who need to apply it, such as physicists in the areas of high energy physics and quantum field theory. Individuals who really desire an in-depth real understanding of characteristic classes, rather than a purely formal one, will find the road difficult. There does not seem to be anywhere in the literature a treatment of characteristic classes that gives genuine insight on why these objects work as well as they do for the jobs they are supposed to do. This book is no exception to this, but it does serve to introduce the reader to the theory of characteristic classes as it has been developed in the last few decades. The first chapter is an introduction to de Rham homotopy theory, and its purpose is to outline the approach of using differential forms rather than cohomology groups to study the homotopy type of a smooth manifold. After a brief overview of Postnikov decompositions, the author discusses the rational homotopy type of a topological space. This is a strategy that is based on ignoring torsion and viewing the homotopy group as being over the rational numbers. This makes computation of the homotopy type much easier. The rational spaces have fundamental groups that are Lie groups over the rationals and each higher homotopy group is a vector space over the rationals. This theory is basically due to D. Sullivan and his main results are proved in this chapter. The interesting part of this discussion is the construction of de Rham complexes over simplicial complexes instead of smooth manifolds. The author shows in detail how the rational cohomology can be computed for these types of objects. He then discusses the cohomology of groups in terms of Eilenberg-Maclane spaces, and defines what is called the Malcev completion of a finitely generated group. This is basically a rational nilpotent completion of the group, and is used in the chapter to give the connection between fundamental groups and differential forms.
In chapter 2, the author discusses characteristic classes over flat bundles. The author shows very effectively how the fundamental group of the base space of a flat bundle can introduce twist in the flat bundle. The Chern-Weil theory, which allows one to study the global structure of principal bundles with a given Lie group as a structure group, is reviewed in the first part of the chapter. The author also gives a very interesting characterization of flatness in terms of holonomy homomorphisms. Then after a brief overview of the cohomology of Lie algebras, he defines characteristic classes of flat product bundles. Since a given principal bundle may not be trivial, defining characteristic classes for a general flat principal bundle takes more work, which the author does nicely in what follows. The Chern-Simons theory, so important in physical applications, is then discussed as a specialization of the Chern-Weil theory. The author then returns to the consideration of characteristic classes of flat bundles via Gelfand-Fuks cohomology. This is the cohomology of the subcomplex of the continuous cochains of the smooth vector fields of a smooth manifold, and the author shows how it acts as a characteristic class for flat product bundles.
The author moves on to the characteristic classes of foliations in chapter 3. This is a topic very important to those who study dynamical systems, and the author gives a pretty good overview of how characteristic classes can measure the global properties of foliations. He reviews briefly what foliations are, and then defines the Godbillon-Vey characteristic class for a foliation of a smooth manifold. The author gives an example of foliation for the Lie group PSL(2, R), and shows the existence of a non-trivial Godbillon-Vey class for a collection of torsion-free discrete subgroups of this group. The Bott vanishing theorem is proved, and then the author shows how to relate the Gelfand-Fuks cohomology to the characteristic classes of foliations via the Weil algebra. Then the author gives a fascinating discussion on how to find "discontinuous invariants" induced by a real cohomology class. The discussion is very interesting given the disparity between real and integer cohomology classes. He then returns to the consideration of the characteristic classes of flat bundles where now the Lie group is replaced by a given closed smooth manifold.
In the last chapter of the book, the author discusses the characteristic classes of surface bundles, where the genus of the surface is greater than or equal to 2. String theorists will appreciate the discussion, as it goes into the mapping class group of surfaces, the Teichmuller modular group, and how they act on the homology group of surfaces. The author shows explicitly how to construct surface bundles with non-trivial characteristic classes, and gives a brief outline of the proof that these characteristic classes are algebraically independent.
The author ends the book with a discussion of future research problems for the interested reader, along with a short list of references.
