About the Author
Laura M. Justice, Ph.D., is a clinical speech-language pathologist and applied researcher in early childhood language and literacy development, communication disorders, and educational interventions. Dr. Justice is Professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University, is Editor of the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, and is Founding Editor of Evidence-Based Practice Briefi. Dr. Justice's research activities have received grant support from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation, the International Reading Association, the National Institutes ofHealth, and the U. S. Department of Education's Institute ofEducation Sciences. She has received such awards and honors for her work as the Editor's Award for the American Journal of5peech-Language Pathology, the Early Career Publication Award from the Council for Exceptional Children's Division for Research, the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering from President G. W. Bush, and a Fulbright Scholar Award. Justice has published nearly 100 articles, chapters, and reports on early education and language lliteracy intervention and has authored or edited seven books.
Helen K. Ezell, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist who specializes in the study of child language development and disorders. In addition to her research in child language, she has an interest in the preparation of teacher-scholars in speechlanguage
pathology. Dr. Ezell is affiliated as adjunct faculty with the University of Pittsburgh, where she teaches in the areas of communication science and disorders.

I particularly liked the use of examples that were given

I had to purchase this book for a college course I was taking. Honestly, I don't even remember learning all of the syntax in this book when I was younger. There's a wealth of information here and each chapter has questions to test your understanding at the end. I particularly liked the use of examples that were given; they made the information much more easy to process and remember.

Nobel Peace laureate Mandela understandably gets top billing here, but this collection of short fables compiles writings and translations by numerous authors and features illustrations by a diverse collection of artists. Together, the tales and their accompanying artwork create a patchwork of legends drawn from all over the African continent, from Morocco to Kenya to Swaziland. Snakes with seven heads and Zulu tricksters are found here, as well as various creation myths and a Kenyan lion (with the familiar name of Simba) who teaches a cunning hyena a lesson. The colorful birds, giant elephants and mischievous children populating the volume teach sometimes cryptic lessons about obedience, perseverance, cooperation and the simple strangeness of life. In one story, the children of an East African village must destroy a beautiful and enchanting bird that has brought bad luck to the surrounding countryside. In another, a courageous girl frees a prince from the spell that made him a python. In tales such as these, the dream-like, unpredictable symbology and sometimes cruel morality of myths resonate, and, in Mandela's words, the "gritty essence of Africa" shines through in stories with universal themes.

Grade 1-5-Mandela states in the foreword, "It is my wish that the voice of the storyteller will never die in Africa-.," and he has chosen 32 traditional tales for this handsome oversized volume. While nearly half the selections have their origins in South Africa, the rest represent some of the continent's most cherished tales and come from Botswana, Swaziland, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and other sub-Saharan countries as well as a single selection from Morocco. Each story is introduced with a short provenance or source note, and a frontispiece map matches each tale with its geographical area. Told by a variety of storytellers and folklorists, or gleaned from previously published sources, the tellings vary from literary to contemporary. The book also provides a showcase for 18 illustrators, mostly from South Africa, who contributed one full-page illustration per story. This is a rich collection that would provide depth and breadth to any classroom study alongside the many single-tale picture-book editions readily found on library shelves.

The story readings on this audiobook are wonderful for children of all ages and adults as well, and your purchase supports children in South Africa orphaned by AIDS.

Excellent, entertaining read-aloud stories

I have been reading these aloud at bedtime to my 8 year old twins and they both love them! Why? They are anything but predictable! I think they have come to expect happy endings or moral lessons, but these stories often have twists that surprise them. Not a lot of illustrations, but the ones they have are lovely and diverse. We have enjoyed looking at the map of Africa marked with flags of where the stories come from. Also have had the opportunity to talk about Nelsen Mandela and his story, which is new to them. Great all around book!

Balaguer discusses determinism, the view that every physical event is predetermined, or completely caused by prior events. He describes several philosophical and scientific arguments against free will, including one based on Benjamin Libet's famous neuroscientific experiments, which allegedly show that our conscious decisions are caused by neural events that occur before we choose. He considers various religious and philosophical views, including the philosophical pro-free-will view known as compatibilism. Balaguer concludes that the anti-free-will arguments put forward by philosophers, psychologists, and neuroscientists simply don't work. They don't provide any good reason to doubt the existence of free will. But, he cautions, this doesn't necessarily mean that we have free will. The question of whether we have free will remains an open one; we simply don't know enough about the brain to answer it definitively.

Excellent. The Free Will book I was looking for.

I recently read Sam Harris's book entitled Free Will with the desire to learn more about this fascinating topic. I appalled at his fatuous and arrogant arguments while I was looking for a balanced and well argued discussion when I acquired his book. I was so put off by Harris's book that I searched to find a book which was what I wanted in the first place. One that treated the subject seriously and I could learn more. Well, Mark Balaguer's book is the one I wanted after all.
Mark does a fantastic job of teaching the reader about the essential issues of the problem of free will. Unlike Harris, he does not shove his arguments down your throat but methodically shows them to you. Though ultimately his arguments are critical of hard determinism and supportive of free will, unlike Harris, he correctly states that no one can yet claim to have totally proven the issue either way. He takes a truly scientific view on the subject. His arguments show scientific thought is open ended, not dogmatic, and one must always be skeptical of overly forceful argumentation. Especially, arguments based on biased interpretations of data. Mark expertly revealed problems in interpreting some neuroscience based results which in Harris's book are established facts he claims utterly prove determinism and disprove free will. In Mark's book, things are not so black and white and he guides you through a nuanced view of the issues and the science at this time.
Mark, like Harris, is a materialist and atheist, yet doesn't see the need to go on a polemical crusade against the theists with the issue of free will. Mark's book argues that free will is not an exclusive part of religious otherworldly concepts but is part of the scientific view of the human brain. That theists claim belief in free will doesn't take it off the table of scientific inquiry he claims. The human brain can have a materialist based free will, though it is not completely demonstrated now by science, neither is determinism as argued in this book.
I highly recommend this book to the intellectually curious reader who wants to learn about this fascinating subject. You finish this book feeling you have learned a lot and have been shown a truly nuanced scientific and psychological investigation of free will and determinism. Please pardon me for referencing Harris' book so much, but I feel it is worth it because the extreme contrasts between the two books underline how effective Mark's book is. Indeed, I would recommend a first time reader of Mark's book to read the other afterwards. This is the book on the subject that should be on the best seller list .

Slippery

The book starts off well, and gives an introduction to a few definitions of free will and major counter arguments. However, the argumentation itself is worthy of a star politician; By stealthily exploiting the casual tone of the book, he shifts things around until he finally end up selling you something completely different at completely warped premises.

Don't be fooled by the book series being "The MIT Press Essential Knowledge Series" - this is far from a presentation of essential knowledge. This is a sloppy (but very well written) blog post about free will. I give it 3 stars because it will introduce people who are unsure about what the whole concept of free will is all about to some basic concepts, because it is written in an entertaining style, and because it functions as a good practice text for finding flaws in argumentation. As an accurate response to the problems of free will, on the other hand, I find it pretty useless.

Wonderfully Clear Introduction

Free Will is a challenging, lively, eminently readable introduction to a difficult but fascinating and important philosophical problem. The prose is direct, clear, and accessible, and there is just enough humor and real-life examples along the way to keep things comprehensible and interesting without veering off topic. Professor Balaguer is particularly good at delving into the ways science can both potentially illuminate, and in the wrong hands distort and obfuscate, the nature of human choice.

About the Author
Parveen Kaur Dhillon is a Sikh-American who is passionate about spreading multicultural education through the celebration of various traditions and holidays. She is the award-winning author of My First Sikh Books, a set of books designed to strengthen the pride and self-identity of young Sikh-American children. Parveen co-authored the curriculum for The Sikh Next Door, a multimedia, cross-cultural, educational project that provides a glimpse into the Sikh-American experience of children across the United States. She has also co-authored resources on bullying prevention and is active in multiple Punjabi community activities.

Parveen holds a Masters in Education from the University of Virginia and a BA in History and Asian Studies from Loyola University. She studied in Nanjing, China as an undergraduate and taught English in Japan for the JET program.

Parveen was born in Virginia, raised in Maryland, and is settled in San Jose, California, with her Blue Devil husband, her twelve-year-old magician, her ten-year-old crafty artist, and her seven-year-old music lover.

Great for educating our little 2 year old about her Punjabi heritage. I love the English and Punjabi. My daughter loves the songs in the back. I wish there was a CD with music to sing these songs with. That would be an awesome addition and I know we would enjoy those songs in the car!

What a Wonderful Gift to Warm Winter Hearts

Just got this book for my 4 year old daughter who loves to dress up in her Punjabi clothing and needless to say she is loving it.

The book is a beautiful and colorful introduction to the fun filled culture of Punjab. Ajeet and Raakha are celebrating Lohri by dressing up, dancing, singing the Lohri song and enjoying the yummy treats around the bon fire. The book brings it all to you, the song, the recipes, the cultural significance, all through bilingual child friendly poetic story telling. Must have for all times to come and read to the kids every winter to warm their hearts and keep the traditions alive.

LOOKING FOR LOVE !!!

Wow! I must say, I'm more than a little intrigued by It Takes Two, The Matchmaker Series by Ellie Danes. This is the second installment of the serial and it is absolutely captivating and a brilliant continuation of the story. Yes, I said serial. This is not a stand alone story so readers, please be forewarned. Personally, I love serials. It's like watching my favorite weekly TV shows and if you have Kindle Unlimited like I do, then it's good as gold. So, now having said that, back to the story. It's exciting, fascinating, intriguing, romantic, sensual and arousing. There are a few editing errors which are a little distracting but over all the story is well executed and the dialogue is well written, intelligent and flows beautifully. The characters are captivating, engaging and sexy as sin. Danes skillfully combines these elements to craft an enthralling and intoxicating read. Harper is a 24 year old grad student barely making ends meet on her part time salary. She has always been able to match up everyone but herself. She's just unlucky in love. Hopefully, this latest breakup fiasco with Jake will teach her a lesson. She always falls for the wrong guys. Maybe she's just looking in all the wrong places. And after attending a disastrous mixer with her best friend and roommate Avery, she's even more convinced that she's doomed to always meet the wrong guy. Yep, just cursed never to find love. What Harper couldn't know but hopefully will soon learn, she has been noticed by Mason Asher, the 'big cheese' of matchmakers. He's handsome, charming, wealthy and knows what he wants and usually gets it. But is his interest professional or is it personal? Well, I guess we'll have to continue reading to find out! Oh my! I can hardly wait to read Part Three and it's already available! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

Good second installment. Can hardly wait for the third, fourth, and fifth! Wish it was already finished so I could have read the whole series at once! Excellent start for this author!

The Matchmaker Series is absolutely amazing!

The Matchmaker Series is absolutely amazing! The story between Mason Asher and Harper Browing is sinfully delicious! Ellie does such a great job of painting the picture and setting the scene at the mansion and chemistry between Mason and Harper is absolutely explosive I mean it practically leaps off of the page. Ellie has this magical way of including the reader in the story and it makes you feel like your along for the ride and as a reader that is exactly what I look for I want to be so lost in the story that I forget everything around me and that is exactly what is achieved with this series. There is so much suspense and drama in this novella that I was on the edge of my seat and biting my nails the entire time! And goodness was it steamy I mean hot and steamy I am pretty sure at one point my glasses would have fogged up if I hadn't taken them off!

This is definitely a series that I would recommend you take the time to read I loved every second of it! I cannot wait to see what the next one holds!
