About the Author
Herbert Marks is Professor of Comparative Literature at Indiana University, where he also directs the Institute for Biblical and Literary Studies and edits the monograph series Indiana Studies in Biblical Literature. A Superb Edition (Vol. 1)

W. H. Auden didn't like people who "read the Bible for its prose," but people do this, as well as read for poetry and content. Many of them would like
(1) the King James version, because of language and history;
(2) scholarly footnotes, providing corrections and clarifications;
(3) prose in paragraphs;
(4) verse in lines; and
(5) readable type that's not cramped in columns.
The Norton Critical Edition offers all this, plus hundreds of pages of commentary. The volume with the Old Testament has Near Eastern documents including creation myths; traditional Jewish and Christian exegesis; passages from the likes of Moses Maimonides, Thomas Aquinas, the Qur'an, and Voltaire; and literary works by authors including George Herbert, Herman Melville, and Franz Kafka. There are comparative translations of Genesis 1:1-8 and Psalm 23.
The two volumes aren't beyond criticism, but as a whole they're wonderful. They should have existed years ago.

At last!

Finally someone has done what someone should have done for 50 years, which is to provide an annotated edition of the KJV, including updates on translation issues. Like all Nortons, the text is clear, great notes. The notes are at the bottom of the page. Means we can dump the crap translations. I exempt Alter from that last sentence.
Bliss, really.
BUT WHERE IS THE HARDCOVER EDITION? We are talking the Bible here, which means a lifetime of study, recourse to it at various points, references, etc. WE NEED A HARDCOVER EDITION, GODS OF NORTON (I appreciate that this is blasphemy, see Old Testament...hey, this is the Old Testament!!!!)!!!!

The best annotations available for literary reading

Having studied with Professor Marks, I know the amount of erudition and sensitive reading that have gone into this work. The introductions and annotations are excellent for literary readers looking to pay close attention to textual nuances and intertextual connections. A brilliant piece of work that ought to be on every serious reader's shelf.
