Bad. Just really bad.

I bought both books at the same time based on the reviews. I will never do that again!!
These were some of the worst books I have read since getting my kindle a year ago and I've read over two hundred books. Not only was the editing horrible the H/h were horrible as well. One minute they are acting tough and cocky and the next they are acting weak and ridiculous, BOTH of them. There were times when it felt like the author was trying to fit every horrible cliche known to man kind in before it was over. The h was mouthy toward the Mafia! Yet for some reason she is allowed to get away with it..ok, not believable at all. The so called Mafia king goes around killing people in cold blood for years yet Bree is able to stop him by simply telling him how wrong it is. Just bad bad bad! I'm sorry, I'm sure the author worked really hard on this book but no fricking way does a "Mafia king" become an FBI agent!!! Nope not even in book world.

Excellent HEA for the relationship with Zerro. The cliffhanger from Indebted (A Kingpin Love Affair Book 1) was pretty scar. I loved the way that she turned the whole thing around. I really thought that she was in a bad place, but it pulled together really well in the end.

Excellent recipes

This book has revolutionized my cooking style - especially with simple techniques like charring vegetables and spices instead of sautéing them. The range of dishes is impressive and the recipes come out great. Some of them are time-consuming and most of them are designed for 6-8 or more people, but I've had good luck tailoring them down to two or four servings. We don't have good Yucatecan or Mayan restaurants where I live, but luckily I've been able to get all the necessary ingredients at local Latino markets. The book also provides suppliers of ingredients as well.

Great Food! Easy Recipes!

I was delighted to find this book that had several recipes I've been looking for - Pavo en escabeche and Pavo Negro. We used to enjoy these at a family restaurant in Pasadena (CA) that disappeared. Most Mexican cookbooks do not include Yucatec Maya recipes - which these are.
The directions are easy to understand, and he gives alternative ingredients for not commonly found ones. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for some rich and spicy dishes (chili heat can be adjusted for taste).

Not quite Mexican but certainly not American, so what is Mayan cuisine? Well today it might be best described as a culturally-rich cuisine that is now centred in the Yucata region that, of course, has developed and changed over time whilst drawing on Mexican and Southern American roots. Confused? You might not be the only one, which possibly makes the recipes within this book to be even more special, enlightening and worthy of a try.
This is a beautiful book that, thanks to its wonderful full-colour photography, you might at first mistake for a travel guide. The reader is gradually brought to the realisation that they will, in fact, eventually be cooking, through a fairly comprehensive introduction and overview to key ingredients and cooking techniques that are prominently featured within the various recipes.
It was pleasing to note the author's emphasis that, whilst it is desirable to get authentic, in-season ingredients wherever possible, alternatives and practical substitutions will not necessarily spoil the recipe. A small thing that other authors could emulate as sometimes you can be driven batty trying to find a particular, hard-to-locate ingredient! Many of the mini tutorials about roasting, toasting and charring various ingredients could also serve as a good primer that will benefit many other recipes over time.
At the start much is made about the preparation of various recados, a means of seasoning, rubs and marinades in Mayan cuisine, and this reviewer is looking forward to using some of these in a fusion-esque form with other recipes as they appear just too good to reserve for purely Mayan cooking. Many different salsas, or sauces, are also featured and here the alert reader might suddenly take note and begin to see countless other uses for this book. From what appears at first to be a great, niche book the more adventurous cook will surely find a lot of inspiration in Mayan cuisine that can be transplanted as a base or associate to other cuisines.
Each recipe invariably features an overview about the dish and perhaps its cultural role or some other little nugget of information. The text is laid out in an easy-to-follow and understand form. The only criticism is an oft-repeated one - an estimation of a typical preparation and cooking time would be an aid to the nervous, time-limited cook! A simple thing that many authors tend to forget.
The recipes just keep on coming. Appetizers, corn & bread dishes; salads, side dishes & vegetables; soups & stews; meat; poultry; seafood; desserts and beverages all get their own section. After a time, this reviewer stopped making a note of recipes he wanted to try, such was the sheer flood of interesting, intriguing recipes being presented. Things are rounded off at the end by a brief sources list for ingredients and equipment - mostly of use for North American readers - and a good, comprehensive index.
All in all, this is a great book, made even greater by its relative `difference' despite it, at times, feeling frustratingly familiar thanks to the various Tex-Mex cuisine influences. The price tag is on the higher side of things but the book manages to differentiate itself with distinction to make this a worthy investment. In the right hands, it might significantly change the underlying nature of your cookery!

Hope might not be enough, but this book helped me hang onto what little bit I had left.

In Oct 2007, I was at my wits end and ready to walk away from my raging husband after 4 months of marriage. He had been in therapy for over a year, yet still raging almost daily, beating himself half to death, lying to me about the most ridiculous stuff and destroying our home. All this chaos was causing my 2 teenagers to alienate me out of fear of him. As a Project Manager, I had participated in many classes and seminars on effective communication in the workplace through my job, but it seemed that nothing I tried worked with my husband... most of the time, it only seemed to make things worse. I truly felt helpless. I knew I loved him and I fully understood the complexity of this disorder and how my own (natural) reactions to his behavior contributed to the dynamics of our relationship, but I also realized I didn't have what it took to provide the healthy and supportive home environment I knew he needed in order to heal from his past.

At the urging of my own therapist (whom I had retained for my own sanity), I decided to join an online support group for loved ones of people who suffered from Borderline Personality Disorder. I found a group called Anything To Stop The Pain (ATSTP). As time went by (with me lurking in the group), I realized that the founder of the group (Ben Dobbs, the author of this book) was promoting a very similar approach with group members that my husband's therapist was using with him during their sessions. I got more involved with the group and learned how to use this approach, at home, with my husband (and, consequently, with other family members also.)

Ten months later, I'm happy to say that my husband's raging has reduced to, maybe, once every few months and the intensity is nothing like before --- despite the fact that he hasn't been attending therapy on as regular a basis as I had understood was necessary for improving his emotional health. We are finally enjoying the closeness we both wanted in our marriage. My house feels and looks like a home again (rather than a battlefield) and my kids are back to spending more time with us again. He is slowly changing his maladaptive coping methods to more healthy ones... and working out his past by using this same approach with his own family. It feels good to get genuine apologies (versus "FINE! IT'S ALL MY FAULT!!") and 'thank you's' (versus daily blaming and projecting) for my patience and understanding.

I have read many books on this disorder. I found 'Stop Walking on Eggshells' to be quite validating to my feelings as a loved one (a NON) to a borderline. In that sense, it was very healing for me, personally, but it didn't help me improve my relationship. 'I Hate You, Don't Leave Me', 'Sometimes I Act Crazy' and 'Get Me Out of Here' were beneficial to me in that they helped remind me that my husband's erratic behaviors really were not about me at all. From my personal experience, this book is the next progressive step for those who recognize that they cannot FIX their borderline loved one, yet still have a smidgen of hope that there is a way to find peace and harmony with this person IN their life.

I have read the book and it amazes me how so much valuable information can be condensed into such a quick and easy read. It is written in a style that most anyone can understand and it is filled with useful examples on how to use this approach in everyday situations we all face with highly emotional people. Used correctly, the information provided in this book can help you improve your relationship right now... not next year, not next month, TODAY.

I highly recommend it for anyone who truly wants to learn how to effectively communicate with someone (spouse, parent, child, friend, co-worker or boss) who is struggling with an emotional regulation disorder. You don't have to give up your rights or go without getting your needs met anymore to stay in this relationship! And the nice thing is, it doesn't require therapy or counseling to be successful. All you need is an open mind and a desire to try something different... something that works!

A "Rosetta Stone" for Dealing with Family Member with BPD That Has Given Me Hope and Understanding

I have been on a "journey" now for 5 years trying to understand what was happening with my young daughter who has now been diagnosed with traits of borderline personality disorder (BPD). I have read vast amounts of literature on this topic and have been in counseling for my family during this time. I found this book to be a "Rosetta Stone" in offering me specific techniques and skills for dealing with my daughter so I can better understand her and communicate with her.

This book far surpasses many that I have read in that it offers specific ways that the person who does not have the disorder can better communicate with the person who has the disorder. By reducing the conflict and emotional dysregulation in these interactions, this can actually help the person with BPD to reduce their symptoms.

As soon as I started reading this book, I was able to immediately implement the techniques into my household and I automatically started seeing a difference because I was changing the way I was interacting with her. I still have much to learn and the author said it took him a full two years to master the tools that he provides.

What is so amazing about this book is that the author is not a professional counselor or medical practitioner but instead he is the father of a child with BPD traits and he also has a spouse with BPD. So he has actually learned these techniques as a result of living in the situation.

I can't say enough good things about this book in terms of how it has helped me change how I interact with my daughter and how this has greatly helped to increase the peace in our household. Mr. Dobb's techniques have helped me to "validate" my daughter's feelings and emotions whereas in the past I didn't realize or understand how my actions were not helping the situation.

The book has been like a "Rosetta Stone" in terms of helping to "translate" the language of very emotionally sensitive daughter. Mr. Dobbs also has a web site called "Anything to Stop the Pain."

Some of the most important insights coming out the book is that people with BPD are not deliberately trying to hurt their family members. It is just that their emotions are so painful that they have a hard time controlling them. Once you can realize that this is not personal and that interacting with them in another way can reduce their emotional dysregulation, it makes life easier. It is still a struggle but at least it gives one more understanding as well as tools and techniques to work with. Mr. Dobbs has just come out with a new ebook called "Beyond Boundaries" that is available on his web site.

Advice for how to tolerate a BP

It is important for readers to remember that this book was written by someone with no medical or mental healthcare related credentials- as the author acknowledges. Unfortunately, his advice about how to cope with and manage a relationship with a "BP" (someone who suffers from borderline personality disorder (BPD)) falls short. There is no real possibility for a "Non" (someone who does not suffer from BPD who is in a relationship with a BP) to have a healthy relationship with a BP unless the BP recognizes their need for (and seeks) professional help. Following the advice in this book, you might reduce the intensity of any volatile and upsetting interactions with a BP, but you will never eliminate them nor will you create a normal relationship with the BP. You will expend significant time and energy adapting your behavior to accommodate their disordered and often abusive behavior, and you will need to continue this for the duration of your relationship with the BP. In this book, you are advised to essentially overlook or set aside what is widely accepted as verbal abuse from the BP- not good advice for anyone who wants to maintain any sense of self-esteem or normalcy, and irresponsible if you have children who witness or overhear these encounters. In the case of the BP being a dependent child, this book may help you keep your sanity as you fulfill your parental duties, but in the case of chosen relationships, this book basically teaches you to accept a non-fulfilling, hurtful relationship where your needs are inconsequential as you commit to living your life around the BP's disordered thinking and behaviors. Nons need to recognize that there is NOTHING they can do or say to heal a BP, and the question they need to consider is: Do I want to commit myself to a relationship where my role is to repeatedly sidestep or overlook the BP's disordered thinking and outbursts? If your answer to this question is "yes", then you may find this book useful. I would hope that most people who read this book recognize that its "tools" are really instructions for sacrificing one's own true happiness and well-being for their BP- who does not even understand (or care) that they are doing so. This is the reality of dealing with a BP, and while calmness is always a preferable state, it does not in itself constitute a healthy, loving relationship.

About the Author
Claire Kells was born and raised outside Philadelphia. She received a degree in English from Princeton University and a medical degree from the University of California. Currently in residency, she lives and works in the Bay Area. This is her first novel.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC - intense, addictive & emotional

Thank you Judy from Random House Australia for inviting me to read this fabulous debut. Claire Kells has created one amazing New Adult romance. Her characters are complex and the topic is no easy subject to write about or read for that matter, PTSD is a taboo subject really, but the realism Ms Kells inflicts in her book places you right in the heart of Avery. The details of the plane crash were meticulous and with so many happening in real life these days, it brings to the forefront the topic of locator beacons. I really loved the scene when the plane was falling between Colin and Avery, it was very sweet and inspiring. Colin is such a beautiful guy that is totally misunderstood, but he is my hero.

Avery Delacorte is a nineteen year old swimmer. She’s been in the pool since the age of three and is the youngest of four children. Her three older brothers are in the spotlight themselves, two being baseball superstars and one in Hollywood. Avery had moved across the country to be part of the best college swim team and to escape expectations from her family.

Avery became a different person when she moved, popular and social and a much loved boyfriend that’s also on the swim team, Lee. Her first week as a freshman and the first person she notices in the pool is Colin Shea. His butterfly was powerful and he stands out against all the others in the pool. He was clearly born to be a swimmer and is being called the next Michael Phelps.

Now a sophomore and Avery is heading home for the holidays. Colin and Phil Markey (also on the team) are on the same flight. Colin is a massive muscular guy and ends up sitting next to Avery, though she isn’t happy about it; she has been avoiding him since she started college. Anyway, Avery dozes off, it’s a six hour flight after all, but is suddenly awoken with screams and panic.

Colin is calm and confident, he takes Avery’s hand and tells her “we’re going to make it, Avery” they weren’t going to die. How does he stay so calm is such chaos? As they fall from the sky, Colin and Avery look at each and then “don’t be afraid” BANG CRASH!

Will they be rescued? How will they survive in a wilderness that’s covered in snow? Will they give in to their true feelings? What will happen if they return?

The intense scenes in the wilderness, the survival skills that Avery learnt from her father and the love she discovers are all incredible in itself. But with the addition of the other elements about her brother’s, her family life and Colin revealing his, adds to one marvellous debut. Ms Kells is now certainly a favourite of mine and I cannot wait to read what she creates next.

A thoroughly engrossing book

We all know the statistics about air travel. How it’s so much safer than driving a car. How the number of people dying in plane crashes grows smaller every year, while the number of people who survive them grows larger. How, despite recent news, plane travel continues to get safer and safer every year. Yet who among us does not squeeze the arm rest just a little tighter during take-off and landing? Driving a car at least provides an illusion of being in control. There’s no such illusion strapped into a plane seat.

For Avery Delacorte, the protagonist of Claire Kells’ Girl Underwater, the airplane that takes her and her college swim teammates, Phil and Colin, from their California school to their hometowns near Boston, only represents the six hours in between her and reuniting with her family for Thanksgiving. Sophomore Avery finds Colin, a powerful senior, particularly intimidating, and is dismayed when he plops down on the seat next to her. But when the flight goes down somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, she’s glad that calm, strong Colin was her seatmate. Avery and Colin help three small boys out of the plane; Colin carries an unconscious pregnant woman on his shoulder. They’re the only survivors, and they watch the plane sink into an enormous, cold lake. Luggage floats nearby, but the lake is cold and the swimmers are hurt. They’re in the middle of nowhere and winter is coming. How will they survive?

While structured differently, Girl Underwater reminded me a lot of Tracey Garvis-Graves’ novel On the Island, as both books made me think about how long I’d survive in such conditions. Maybe about eight hours. I don’t know how to make a fire from two sticks, or stitch a wound together, or which mushrooms are safe to eat. Books like these are not only entertaining, they’re survival guides.

But structure is key in differentiating these two books. While On the Island (soon to be a major motion picture!) was told in a linear fashion that kept readers wondering if there would ever be an "Off the Island," Girl Underwater alternates between the plane crash and its immediate aftermath with Avery’s story a month later, as she tries to physical and mentally recover. The boys are hospitalized but okay, while Colin is still in critical condition and being transferred to a hospital closer to his home.

As this structure reveals itself within the first few chapters, I’m not giving anything away by describing it. I did, however, wonder why author Kells chose to tell the story this way. As it’s told from Avery’s first person point of view, it seems obvious that all five crash survivors go on to survive their five-day stranding. The mystery then boils down to simpler questions about why Avery doesn’t want to see the boys or Colin again. What exactly happened while they were stranded? Why does she feel so guilty? What is she hiding?

Girl Underwater is a thoroughly engrossing book. The scenes with the five stranded in the snowy Rocky mountains are so well-written, I was completely transported to the setting. However, the scenes of Avery coping after her rescue are sometimes confusing when they should have been mysterious. There are plot holes and inconsistencies that made me wish that such a wonderful book had had a better editor. And while I had no trouble believing that Avery’s surgeon father would have taught her basic – even advanced – life-saving medical techniques, it was too much that he’d taught her advanced survival skills as well. As the Church Lady on Saturday Night Live used to say, "how convenient." Still, these problems only slightly diminished my enjoyment of the book. Despite these flaws, it’s “unputdownable.”

Many readers take up the hobby to be transported to happier, more romantic places – Elizabethan England, high school romance. Then there are those of us who read to go to those bad places – haunted houses, war, desert islands, plane crash aftermath. These books show that not only can man triumph over nature’s worse impulses, we can also triumph over our own.

Read this book, unless you don't like to have fun.

This book is a fun read, and Claire Kells has a remarkable knack for weaving a story of adventure, survival, love, and anguish.

This book will obviously be compared to the Twilight and Hunger Games series. They all feature a female lead character caught between two romantic interests, struggling with both internal and external conflicts and threats to their survival. They're also fun stories that make great reads. Girl Underwater breaks from the other two in some important ways.

First, it's realistic. There's no sci-fi creatures or illogical dystopian future. The scenario could actually happen. This puts a good amount more weight on the author's shoulders to keep things credible, and Kells delivers. She doesn't invent a new order of beings or silly technology to get out of a plot hole. Secondly, the heroine isn't just a confused teenager but a competitive athlete and interesting girl. She's someone young people can look up to and older people can hope to see in their kids. She has her flaws but she also has a multitude of strengths that make you appreciate the depth of her character.

Hollywood execs: buy the rights now. This book would make a great film. Readers: Snatch this book up and have fun with it. Then anxiously wait for the followup. There could be a sequel, but I'd much rather see what else Ms. Kells can imagine. I can imagine that this could be a sleeper hit that everyone comes back to read after the second or third book smashes records. So get in on the ground floor of this remarkable author's storytelling. People who don't like to have fun: you need not apply.

Excellent Source Material

As a former super commuter flying between Minneapolis and Boston on a weekly basis, I read this book with great interest. Ms. Bearce does an excellent job in laying out the pros and cons of this ever more prevalent lifestyle, one that businessmen and women often find themselves in by necessity rather than by choice. If you are in a super commuting relationship, or are contemplating being in one, or are simply interested in what this lifestyle entails, I strongly urge you to read this book. You will not be disappointed.

Very helpful and informative read

Megan contacted my professional organization and told us about her new book "Super Commuter Couples: Staying Together When A Job Keeps You Apart. As a Marriage Family Counselor and spouse of a super commuter I was curious and interested in what she had to say about the topic. I was getting ready to hop on a plane to see my husband across the country and downloaded it on my Kindle and I'm very glad I did.

To begin with, it surprised me to hear was how very common this living arrangement is. While I have dealt with this issue in my own practice over the years, I think what Megan has so successfully done, is address it in a very direct way where she weaves the issues of super commuting into most aspects of relationships. Megan has taken the effort to interview many couples about their experiences with super commuting and she has also researched this contemporary topic from many angles. She is realistic about the challenges of super commuting relationships but also maintains a positive and hopeful outlook. She covers a vast range of situations, from military families to people working in the film business, to managing the challenges of parenting as well as the stresses that come with aging parents. She manages to include a variety of examples so that you get a sense of the common themes that people are challenged with such as all the hellos and goodbyes that come with the territory. There's a lot of information about parenting and she gives helpful tips and advice for keeping families connected while the commuting parent is away. Because my children are now grown, and super commuting is relatively new to my relationship, I was able to get a sense of where I am on the continuum of this lifestyle choice and found it to be validating and encouraging. I think that anyone who is experiencing either side of this arrangement will find this book helpful. She gives many examples of different types of super commuting relationships in the first part of the book and concludes the book with helpful suggestions and very practical tips, websites to visit, etc.

If you are looking for a better understanding of where you are in this lifestyle or are considering making a choice to have this lifestyle, It's a good read and I recommend it.

Excellent Book on the Super Commuter Relationship

As I am currently considering the possibility of a super commuter arrangement between Chicago and New York, this book has become instrumental in my decision process. Megan has written a book that does a good job of explaining what couples and families need to consider before entering into such an arrangement. The author has instant credibility since her husband also travels to New York on a weekly basis, and many examples are of course personal. She's realistic and measured in her approach, and to her credit she doesn't sugar-coat the issues. You'll read about several cases where couples were successful in maintaining this lifestyle, and some cases where they did not succeed. There were many family scenarios listed (married couples, unmarried couples, same sex couples, etc) so there are examples to which almost everyone can relate. Further, there is a great list of enlightening questions at the end of the book that you and your significant other can work on together to make sure it's the right thing for you. This book is as unique as the super commuter arrangement, and certainly I was very happy to find it since it helped my family better understand the important issues before I accept the job in New York.
