About the Author
Hanan Eshel was associate professor in the Department ofLand of Israel Studies and Archaeology at Bar-IlanUniversity, Ramat Gan, Israel. He published extensively onthe Dead Sea Scrolls and conducted many excavations at bothQumran and the Refuge Caves used by Jews during the BarKokhba Revolt.

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN HEBREW IN 2004 ENGLISH READERS (TRANSLATED IN 2008) CAN ALSO NOW APPRRECIATE DR ESHEL'S ADDITIONAL INSIGHTS INTO THE DSS GAINED FROM ARCHEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE WHICH MANY PREVIOUS SCHOLARS, ACCORDING TO ESHEL, SIMPLY HAVE IGNORED (10). ESHEL THEREFORE BELIEVES HISTORICAL NAMES AND EVENTS GLEAMED FROM ABOUT "TEN SCROLLS" (3) GIVE CREDENCE INTO LOOKING MORE CLOSELY INTO THESE MENTIONED HISTORICAL FIGURES (TWELVE IN PARTICULAR) FOR MEANING AND INTERPRETAION OF THE HASMONEAN PERIOD. SO WHILE FOCUSING ON THE PERIOD FROM 170 B.C.E TO 48 B.C.E..HE DISCUSSES SUCH FIGURES IN CHAPTERS TWO THROUGH EIGHT WHO LIVED DURING THIS TIME BY ASSEMBLING VARIOUS AND KEY TEXTS WHICH EVIDENCES HIS POINTS. ESHEL THEN DISCUSSES IN CHAPTER NINE HOW PESHARIM WRITINGS ESSENTUALLY CEASED DUE TO DIFFICULTY IN PROPHETIC INACCURACY (176-177) IN IDENTIFYING "KITTIM" AS WELL AS RISING TURBULENT TIMES GIVING RISE TO HIGHTENED MESSIANIC EXPECTATIONS.
ESHEL FINALLY TIES TOGETHER IN HIS "AFTERWARD" HIS INTERPRETAION OF WHY THE QUMRANIANS CEASED WRITING PESHAREM. IT WAS THEIR "CRISIS OF FAITH" WHICH HAD POSED A "DIFFICULT THEOLOGICAL PROBLEM" RELATING TO BEING WRONG ABOUT THEIR PREVIOUS PROPHETIC PREDICTIONS ON WHO WOULD PERSECUTE ISRAEL DURING THE LAST DAYS. FROM THEN ON ( "SOMETIME BETWEEN 63 AND 31 B.C.E." 179) IN ESHEL'S ESTAMENT, PESHAREM CEASED.THIS GAVE RISE TO ORAL INTERPRETATIONS (187) WHICH CONTINUED UNTIL QUMRANS DESTRUCTION.
WHY DOES ESHEL FOCUS ON THIS TIME FRAME? BECAUSE THE HASMONEAN REBELLION "EFFECTED ALL OF WESTERN HISTORY" AND THEIR VICTORY PROBABLY SAVED "JEWISH RELIGION" FROM EXTINCTION (QUOTING MENAHEM STERN 189).
INTERACTING BETWEEN JOSEPHEUS' STATEMENTS AND THE DSS ESHEL THEREBY SEEKS TO VERIFY JOSEPHUS' HISTORICAL POLITICAL PRONOUNCEMENTS WHILE ALSO VERIFIYING DSS STATEMENTS THROUGH JOSEPHUS' WRITINGS.
