It works! And, it's not as scary as it seems!

This book has made a HUGE difference in my family! My husband and I were very anti-sleep training, but our 5 month old was becoming a worse and worse sleeper and we were all suffering. After trying a variety of co-sleeping and no-cry methods, I finally decided to read Ferber's book. The science and research in this book convinced me to try it. I learned all about sleep associations and how my son had some that were really making it impossible for him to sleep independently. Ferber gives an analogy that led to my aha moment: Imagine you went to sleep in your bed with the conditions you're used to: same bed, pillow, blanket, lighting, etc, but then woke up on your living room floor. You would be completely confused and would probably find it very difficult to go back to sleep. This is what happens to babies when they are nursed/rocked to sleep and then placed in another environment already asleep--they wake up confused and unable to go back to sleep. Therefore, babies need to learn how to fall asleep on their own in order to get good quality sleep so that when they wake up they aren't confused and having to adjust to new conditions. This principle makes so much sense that I became willing to try letting my son cry for a bit in order to learn how to fall asleep independently.

The first night was pretty hard. My son whimpered for a bit, then cried as if he was going to die for about 15 minutes. We followed Ferber's recommendations of going in to reassure the baby you're still there for him (without picking him up). He stopped crying and had fallen asleep within 20 minutes. He woke up 2 hours later and cried for about 10 minutes, so my husband went in and patted/talked to him. He then slept for about six hours, woke to nurse and went right back to sleep (no tears) for about three more hours. Previously he had been waking constantly throughout the night, sometimes every 30 minutes.

The second night, he cried for ZERO minutes and was asleep within five minutes. He woke up once to nurse, and then slept until seven AM.

The third night, he cried for ZERO minutes, so now I am writing this review to let parents know that this method worked for my family. My husband and I, who previously believed this method was cruel and not something we'd ever try, have come to the realization that those 15 minutes of crying have led to a child (and a mom and dad) who are MUCH more likely to get some decent sleep and be able to function in the daytime. I think we actually did a very good thing for our child!

A few caveats from our experience: we had a solid bedtime routine for at least a month leading up to this (bath, book, songs, nurse to sleep). We moved the nursing session to right before bath, and kept everything else the same except putting him down awake in his crib. I think having this routine established before trying the Ferber techniques led to us only having one evening of crying and such an easy time with the process. Additionally, the second night I put my son in his pajamas and in a Halo swaddle sack (arms out), and it's possible that snug feeling of the swaddle helped him go right to sleep as well.

No more sleepless nights!!

Our second child was 9-months old and still would not sleep through the night. What made this worse is she would only go to sleep (or back to sleep) if she was given a bottle and rocked. Both my husband and I work full-time so we were exhausted. We could not keep waking up with her 3-5 times a night and still function the next day. We were frustrated and had to teach her to sleep, which this book helped us do...in five nights!

Pros:
- Only took 5 nights and she slept through the night
- By 7 nights she was not eating 2-3 bottles a night
- This was not expected, but she is sooo much happier now! Completely different kid now that she's getting adequate sleep!
- Easy read and thorough. The examples make complete sense and I love that it gives exact steps to follow.

Cons:
- Hard to listen to the baby cry with consoling her. We put our video monitor in there so I could watch her and make sure she was okay.
- Our child was stubborn so the first night it took 2.5 hours of crying before she fell asleep. The next night took 1.5 hours. It lessened each night, but prepare for a long night and do it when you don't have anywhere to be the next day because they also have to put themselves back to sleep when they wake up at night...which takes forever!

Overall, it was a tough week, but completely worth it! I would recommend this to anyone. Never once did I feel like I was neglecting my child and we are both so much happier now that we're getting adequate sleep.

Like most parents, the sound of my baby crying is the worst sound in the world. For this reason, I delayed trying the Ferber method even though I knew rocking my 9 month old daughter to sleep every night was probably unwise, especially because she woke up crying multiple times every night. Out of desperation, I tried the Ferber method, exactly as described in this book. It took only three nights before my daughter stopped crying at bedtime. Now, I don't have to spend 30 minutes to an hour rocking her to sleep. She now reliably goes to sleep every night, with no tears, and with a minimum of fuss. She sleeps pretty much through the night every night.

I can't recommend this book highly enough.

What is going on at Bold Strokes Books?

To tell you the truth I have enjoyed Ali Vali and Radclyffe's writing for a long time. Way back to the time the posted their work on fan sites. I have also enjoyed many of the stable of very good writers they have published in the last few years. Recently however I have been disappointed with books like The Devil Be Damned novel. Also Radclyffe's Trauma Alert. It seems that any book that is part of an established series is dedicated to setting up the next book in the series. Leaving only twenty pages at the end to provide only the most unsatisfactory of plot resolution. This leaves the reader a year before they can get any resolution to several of the plot twists. We readers are being teased unmercifully with books that only offer 264 pages hardly an appetizer for the solid reader. It would be nice to read one of your fine books and close it with the satisfaction I have enjoyed from so many of your past offerings.

The Devil Be Damned is the fourth book in the Casey Family Saga and picks up where Deal With the Devil left off.

Cain Casey should be enjoying her life. Her wife Emma is pregnant with their third child, her family is at the height of its power and the FBI is still running in circles trying to prove that Cain has done something illegal. Problems abound however. Cain's organization is still searching for the men who harmed Emma in the last book, drug lords are trying to form a partnership with the Casey empire, cousin Muriel is sleeping with the FBI agent charged with catching Cain and Remi Jatibon, Cain's friend and business partner, is trying to help her lover Dallas Montgomery overcome shadows from her past. Further complicating matters is the arrival of a woman who wants to control New Orleans and unleashes a brutal wave of killing that shocks even the Caseys and the Jatibons. Cain may have met her match this time.

Ali Vali is one of the best writers in the genre and has created a unique character in Cain Casey. It's not often that the head of a crime family, who doesn't hesitate to use torture and murder when necessary, is used as the definition of honor, tradition and heroism. Vali uses stereotypes in some areas, specifically making FBI agents fanatics, bumblers or criminals, and plays against type when she gives women dominant positions in an environment that usually expects women to stay in the shadows. The use of women in non-traditional roles gives a lift to the story and a different flavor.

The Devil Be Damned illustrates the strongest and weakest aspects of a series. For those fans who have read the previous books, this gives them a chance to catch up with the latest chapters in the lives of some favorite characters. It moves the story forward and allows the reader to reacquaint with Cain, Emma, Remi and the others. Where it falls down is that it's weak as a stand alone novel. There are references to past events with little explanation to set them in context and some of the behaviors in the book don't make sense or seem overblown if the reader doesn't know what's happened before in the saga. The plot lines in this book are also not all resolved. Instead this book is used as a set up for the next in the series. That may be good for selling books, but it's frustrating for a reader.

This is an above average book and worth reading; however, for total enjoyment, it really would be good to start with the first book and work forward. That isn't mandatory, but it will increase the appreciation of the book.

where's the rest of the book?

i have been looking forward to this book FOREVER. now that i have finished it, i'm a bit disappointed by the delivery.

while the writing is okay, it's not as tight as the previous books in the series.

bit of a SPOILER:

was so looking forward to a wrap-up of the events that occurred at the end of Deal w/ the Devil. there is no wrap-up on that major cliffhanger. there are additional plotlines that begin and end in this book, despite the fact that the book is significantly shorter than all the others in the series. i feel like it ends a little abruptly. where is the rest of the book? when will cain get her revenge? when are cain and emma getting married? why is muriel still with shelby? i am happy however, that remi and mano got to go "snake eyes" on a fool and deliver some street justice.

Olympus E-PL1 For Dummies Is A Must-Have For This Camera

After purchasing my Olympus E-PL1 and reading the included user guide several times over, as an experienced semi-pro photographer with a wide-range of camera experiences, ranging from the all-manual ones (circa 1956) through today's modern full-auto DSLR's (Canon 40D, etc.), I came away still having a few vague misgivings and uncertainties which left me uncomfortable.

Even though the manual is technical and not a tutorial, I felt that I should have been able to easily glean the most important necessary information on how to set up and customize the camera's menu system and understand and use the camera's subtleties effectively - in fact, I thought I had.

Nevertheless, I felt that there was a chance that I had overlooked or misunderstood some important menu settings, given the shear complexity and extensive customization the camera is capable of and so I ordered this book after seeing the excellent reviews and high opinions submitted by other readers.

After it arrived I immediately read it from cover to cover with camera in hand and was amazed and shocked as to the level and degree of misinformation I had come away with by only studying the user manual cold. I say shocked, because, with my level of experience and equipment understanding, one would naturally assume that even the most obtuse manual would not be that difficult for both basic and critical settings to be mastered. Was I wrong!

After reading this book for only a few minutes, it became obvious to me that I had completely overlooked many of the co-dependent and subtle modes of advanced operation the many menu settings can employ, none of which were clearly spelled out in the highly condensed manual. Although the author has rightfully (given the title) kept the discussion level geared toward beginners, she has at the same time remained so precise and complete in her explanations that I consider this book a model of technical writing clarity for both amateur and professional readers alike.

During my photographic years I have read hundreds of technical manuals and over 1,000 equipment user guides and this book ranks into the upper 1 percent for clarity, completeness, and engaging personal style, which is a welcome relief for such otherwise dry material.

In addition to the Olympus E-PL1 specific material, I consider this to be one of the very best summary introductions to photography in general, and modern digital cameras in particular, that I have ever come across. The author seems to have a real talent for focusing upon the important while clearly explaining the complex, and avoiding the usual tangents into the irrelevant and/or trivial details many technical writers commonly fall victim to.

The book is well-laid out with appropriate charts, tables, illustrations, and color photos and, with the author's personal suggestions, tips, and observations, the volume provides a wealth of succinct but not too brief material on both the camera and common photographic techniques.

In my opinion, this book is a "must have" for the Olympus E-PL1 owner and for owners of other cameras having similar capabilities - the later models such as the E-PL2, PL3, etc. Hopefully, the author will find the time to update and extend this book to include these later cameras.

Very worthwhile - so much better than the Olympus manual

The menu system of the Olympus PEN E-PL1 is many layered, complex and confusing. The manual Olympus provides is not the greatest. A friend recommended this book to me and I ordered it in the Kindle version for reading on my PC. It is the first Kindle book that I've ever used on the computer. I don't have a Kindle. The content is very well written and helpful and I like the fact that I can use the search function in the Kindle PC software to find answers to specific questions. This book is excellent and I highly recommend it for people who have this camera.

Not Good as an eBook

As an ebook this is not the way to go. I'm finding that reference materials do not make very good ebooks.

I would not advise buying this as a reference manual for the camera, unless it is purchased as a 'real' book.

Actually the contents of this is very good, it was just poor judgement on my part to purchase as an ebook

Nik doesn’t care what I want or what I should be. He wants to tear down the world I’ve built, warping all I am, until his music is all that’s left of me. I can’t let him do that. I shouldn’t believe in him. I’ve seen what happens to the people who believe in him.

But I can’t get his song out of my head.

Mesmerizing, addictive, LGBT speculative fiction

This novel was so utterly mesmerizing that once I started it I couldn’t put it down. I probably should have been horrified by the events that took place, but there was a dreamlike quality to the narrative that most of my attention was focused on trying to figure out what was real and whether the narrator could be trusted.

The narrator Anthony graduated with a PhD in Musicology that is virtually worthless because he can’t get a job in academia. His uncle, who represents musicians, offers him a job as a personal assistant to an artist. Anthony feels that he doesn’t have a choice so he agrees to work for Nik, a rock god, who might actually be a god.

Nik’s music is so dangerous that concertgoers have to sign liability waivers. His concerts incite violence and orgies, and some of his fans have even committed suicide. Anthony thinks his job is to keep Nik under control, so that people won’t be hurt. But he can’t prevent a young woman from committing suicide at a concert and a security guard from being so enthralled by Nik’s music that he neglects his job. Anthony gets into a fight with the security guard, and while trying to protect himself ends up nearly killing the man.

Soon, the FBI is investigating Nik for criminal activity and trying to determine if Anthony is an accomplice. The FBI has no way of proving that Nik is responsible for these deaths, because Nik has an incomprehensible power that can’t be explained in the material world. Anthony has to decide whether he’s going to cover for Nik or help the FBI’s investigation.

It’s a difficult decision because Anthony both hates and lusts for Nik, who binds Anthony to him with the power of a song–a song Anthony can’t stop hearing. It’s a discordant song that Nik initially uses to get Anthony to sleep with him. Once that song is in Anthony’s head, he can’t decide if he really wants to get away from Nik.

What’s so good about this book is its ambiguity. I couldn’t help but want a happy ending for these characters, even though Nik’s morality was in question. I wanted Nik to be redeemed in the end. I wanted their crazy relationship to win. I wanted good to vanquish evil. I wanted Anthony to change Nik. I wanted to believe in Nik.

I wanted to believe that Nik cared for Anthony. That Nik’s ambiguous gestures and seeming concern for Anthony’s safety, his wanting for Anthony, and his admission that Anthony had the power to hurt him meant that Anthony was special to him. But this isn’t a romance novel. There is sex and a relationship, but there’s also codependency and abuse, and in the end it’s Anthony who changes.

I don’t read speculative fiction a lot, but I enjoyed this one immensely. I liked that most of the characters were LGBT. I liked that the main character Anthony was black and self-aware. The author’s inventive writing style really drew me in. I want to read more books like this.

Bacchus is the rockstar Nik. Anthony is the boy who can’t play music. Not real music, anyway. There is so much music in this, singing and screaming off the page, in quiet piano moments, in iPods and soundproof rooms and concert halls. It’s wonderful.

Erica writes vividly and lusciously. The characters, at first unlikeable (but not TOO unlikeable) are slowly revealed. Depths, conflicts, pain, and the human and religious experience. This is a novel to be experienced, rather than read, and it’s addicting.

The good: Protagonists of color, a solid grasp of classical music, a tactile setting.
The bad: Nonconsensual sex, a non-evocative title.

This book is risky. Read a preview first, to see if you can stand it. Splendor awaits. Disclaimer: I know nothing about music. I still loved it.

Erica Kudisch is a rising rock star herself!

Kudisch has always been a solid writer, with a skill for the show-don't-tell and for building delicious layers of tension and drama. She manages to keep a reader actively thinking, which is such a gift.

The Backup is well-paced, driven, and really /interesting/ to read. Anthony Brooks is a great protagonist in that you are rooting for him most of the time, but every now and again wishing he'd choose differently. He's realistic and relatable as a result.

Nik is, well... you'll have to find that out for yourself.

The attention to detail is great; the locations and venues are well fleshed out. Kudisch's own musical background shines through as the tie that binds the whole narrative together and gives a potentially esoteric realm, musicology, tangible life.

The research is there. The fantasy is there. The nod to classical mythology is there. There's balance and unity and, best of all, that raw unfinished edge that leaves you wanting to know where this all leads after the last page is turned.

Kudisch is one to watch, make no mistake.

About the Author
When Mance Ian Wright retired in 2005, he and his wife moved from Des Moines, Iowa, to the Ozark Mountains. After settling in, he started writing short stories. He has a talent, and soon after he published his first book, Clearing the Last Hurdle & Other Short Stories, one of those stories inspired the writing of his first novella, The Long Trip Back. Set in the 1860s in southern Missouri, the book follows the lives of the Hawkins family, touching on the life-changing events that result from a son’s return from the Civil War in 1865.
